The author attempts to establish the foundations for a general theory of adaptation which covers not only interlingual translation but all artistic expressions. Genette's theory of hypertextuality is one of the key bases for this stance. The thesis is illustrated through the analysis of a specific translation/adaptation - the novelization of the film L'immortelle, by Alain Robbe-Grillet.
