Abstract

In this paper, after analyzing the current state of sign-language interpreting in Spain, a proposal for its teaching is presented. In the past, the teaching of sign-language interpreters was almost exclusively carried out by federations of the deaf, and only recently was it included in trade college (FP) training programs. For this reason, this paper's proposal incorporates sign-language teaching into higher learning through a course called University Expert, to be taught by a multidisciplinary staff and which would include professional interpreters, experienced university professors, and native signers, some with hearing impairments. Likewise, and due to the current demand, this course aims to train professionals with a two-sided profile: public-service interpreters (SL- Spanish) and conference interpreters (SL-Spanish-English).
