Abstract

The paper provides a critical overview of prior attempts to solve the translation of proper nouns through long lists of decontextualized equivalents and concludes that their textual function is the real reason behind the strategies used by translators. Thus, it is impossible to provide guidance on how to translate proper nouns without taking a systematic approach to actual textual circumstances.
