Abstract
Expertise tends to be developed on the job, which can lead to the creation of a period when both practitioner and client can be at risk when facing situations which they have not met before. There is also a risk that good practice will emerge as a post facto response to problems that have not been foreseen and taken into account in earlier planning. As the fields stabilize in terms of the number and quality of available practitioners, a system of selection and training needs to be established. However, to this there needs to be added an accessible system of continuing professional development. The proposed paper considers professional standing, access routes to both training and practice, and looks at ways in which individuals may be encouraged to ensure that they maintain suitable professional standards.
