This paper was first presented at the International Symposium on Achievements in the Theory of Translation held in Moscow and Yerevan, 23-30 October 1978. It provides an overview of the problems suffered by translation studies until the end of the 70s, when they were usually considered as a (poor) branch of linguistics, and the focus was on equivalence-cum-identity.
