This paper discusses the problems translators encounter when translating dialectal elements in the speech of literary characters. It analyses four different dialectal varieties in four different novels by Charles Dickens. The specific problem with these dialects is the fact that Dickens makes literary changes to them to ensure their comprehensibility for readers that don't know the dialects in question. The paper discusses the possible attitudes translators can adopt when translating those 'foreign' dialects.
