The play Kartoteka by Tadeusz Różewicz belongs to the important Polish contributions to the theatre of the twentieth century. 'Kartoteka' refers to the structure of the play, which is presented as a montage. Schultze's paper first discusses the central role of the montage in Różewicz's entire artistic work. It then analyses the ways in which this montage principle takes shape on the micro- and macro-levels of Kartoteka and draws attention to the phenomena of 'foreignness' and 'alterity'. The author finally studies a selection of translation problems which are connected with the structure of the play. She compares two German translations of the play with respect to their treatment of the 'foreignness' and 'alterity' in the montage.
