In this article, the author discusses, by way of demonstration, the underlying principles organizing the interplay and oppositions of different semiotic systems prevailing in the German theatre, and dominating the poetological debate in that country – much of it focusing on Shakespeare – during the final thirty-odd years of the eighteenth century.
