Abstract
In the first part of this chapter, the authors give an overview of Katan's (1999) introduction to culture and translation and briefly discuss Lakoff's (1987) study of psychological and cultural influences on the categorization of experience. In the second part of the chapter, they consider how various lexical items are framed within a culture and how the cognitive mapping of lexical relationships overlap and diverge between cultures. The authors look briefly at some examples from contemporary cultures, then, in more detail, at two basic biblical notions.
