Abstract

This is a handbook of poetry translation, touching upon a wide variety of translation problems (from names to rhyme and meter) and using Catullus as the standard example. The book stresses the fact that there are multiple possible renderings in translation, depending on the image of the source text in the receiving culture and on the function of the target text. In its final chapter, it also provides some hints for the teaching of this sort of translation.
