The reasons to support bidirectionality for both translation and interpretation (T/I) are the following: 1. There is a direct relationship between the approach adopted by Spain's public faculties of T/I and the pressing needs and demands of the labor market. This market may be divided into (a) the international organizations (EU, UN...) where conference interpreters work from a number of B languages exclusively, into their mother tongue, and (b) the local markets, where for practical reasons interpreters are requested to work from and into all their working languages. 2. Most of our students were born of Spanish immigrants and brought up in a French-speaking environment. The very distinction between active and passive language becomes blurred in this group. 3. Finally, from an academic viewpoint one can observe the many advantages of bidirectional training for standard expressions, etc.
