In this paper the author investigates the sense of Nonsense in Lewis Carroll’s The Wizard of Oz. By deconstructing the nonsense, she emphasizes certain procedures, founded on the rupture of stereotype relations between the signifier and the signified, as well as on the resemblance of the signifiers, which Carroll uses to give words and utterances ‘another’ sense. This analysis allows to assess more objectively the inevitable loss in every translation of Carroll’s oeuvre and the means that allow to compensate the superficial lexical unfaithfulness.
