Schleiermacher incorporates Goethe’s insight into the translation process and adds his now-famous comments on the relationship between reader-translator-author: “either the translator leaves the writer alone as much as possible and moves the reader toward the writer, or he leaves the reader alone as much as possible and moves the writer to the reader”. In this article, he states, among other items, that the activity of translating is radically different from mere interpreting. Paraphrase and imitation are also discussed.
