Abstract

Studies conducted within the framework of the newly established field of translation process analysis have drawn heavily on introspection as a methodology for investigating the mental process involved in translation. The data emerging from such studies differ widely, however, in their focus, their scope and their applicability to specific purposes. This paper surveys the process studies carried out to date and, in the light of the limitations on introspective data, explores what studies of this kind have to offer translation theorists, teachers or trainers of translators, as well as translators themselves. It suggests in particular that more - and more differentiated - work with professional translators is now needed to inform the vocational postgraduate courses for translators that the profession is increasingly demanding.
