In this paper, Newmark outlines the fact that first of all, a translator is a writer and should therefore possess exceptional knowledge of his/her target language. He argues that “any fool can learn a language, but it takes intelligence as well as skill and knowledge to be able to translate”. He provides some insights on, among other issues: the following: the translator’s qualities and qualifications, the curriculum (theory and practice), testing and examination.
