In this article, the author states that university training of translators in South Africa has been largely irrelevant because the majority of graduate applicants were unable to pass their screening assessments for translating between English and Afrikaans at the state language services. He asserts that university courses are far too theoretical and because of that, students’ linguistic competence is neglected. He advocates stricter screening of potential candidates.
