Assmann, Aleida. 1996. The curse and blessing of Babel; or, looking back on universalisms. In Budick, Sanford and Wolfgang Iser, eds. The translatability of cultures: figurations of the space between. Stanford: Stanford University Press. pp. 85–100.

Abstract

In this paper, the author ponders the problem of translation with respect to the story of Babel. She considers, among other issues, the tower of Babel and the miracle of Pentecost, eschatological universalism, enlightened universalism and the root of universal humanism. She also wonders what is to happen after universalism.
