Abstract

This article considers the formative ‘pain’ of philosophy – “the pain of recognizing oneself in change” – which Cavell describes in his paper. Cavell’s essay is the record of a crisis in his reading of Emerson’s silence of slavery (in Fate), mediated by Heidegger’s silence (in all his philosophical writings) on the Holocaust.
