Abstract

This paper looks into the process of translating legal documents. The author draws on a hermeneutic approach of translating these documents. From this hermeneutic perspective, he distinguishes three phases in the process of translating legal documents. The first step is analysis/comprehension, the second phase of transfer/interpretation and the third and final step is restructuring/recreation. He also looks into some problems of the second phase, focusing, among other items, on terminological, stylistic and cultural issues.
