Abstract
This paper presents the current situation on the translation and interpreting market in Poland and how it has evolved over the last decade. It also describes the Jagiellonian University and its response to the situation. Between 1995 and 1998, Cracow's team of translator and interpreter trainers was engaged in an international programme whose aim was to prepare curricula for teaching translation and interpreting. This article also discusses the co-operation between the university and a number of EU institutions concerned with translation studies. In order to achieve this, several types of questionnaires have been prepared and sent out to teachers and students of translation and interpreting around the country, translation offices, individuals working as translators and interpreters, companies which need translation and interpreting services as well as foreigners who need such services in Poland. Their impact on the prepared curricula is discussed.
