Abstract

The author starts from the observation that most of the dominant discourse on translation usually revolves around the desire to neutralize difference and to achieve perfect repetition. She intends to examine the main implications of the ethical code that inspires essentialist expectations towards the translators's task in Edgar Allan Poe's The Oval Portrait. Poe's tale offers an emblematic illustration of the complex relationship between originals and translations.
