Abstract

The author of this paper is concerned with political interculturality, a translator’s or (editor’s) preventive response to the unspecified threats of censorship held out by the Karslbader Beschlüsse of 1819. The paper embarks upon the analysis of German translations of the novel published shortly after these censorship laws had been implemented in all the principalities which then made up Austria and Germany. The paper is concerned with a characteristic element of the political culture of that time and the way in which some – but not all – of the translators of the novel responded to the undesirable elements of this imported narrative.
