This article argues that although translation into the cinema demands intersemiotic procedures, those are constrained by cultural aspects. This is illustrated by the intersemiotic translation of Shakespeare's play King Lear into a film by Grigori Kozintsev. The filmmaker uses intersemiotic procedures which include operations consisting of finding both visual and cinematographic equivalents for the verbal images of the play. However, as cultural aspects prove paramount in the process of translation, the film illustrates and expands one of these aspects, the social question, by virtue of images that elicit social conscience and Christian and Brechtian elements as well.
