Abstract

The present study is dedicated to the life and the work of the writer Boris Shivachev, the first Hispanist in Bulgaria. It presents the sociohistorical and cultural contexst on the Balkans and, particularly, in Bulgaria, which determine the appearance of a cosmopolitan intellectual in the Bulgarian society of the twenties and thirties. The article includes biographical data, the ideas of Boris Shivechev, the two aspects of his work as a popularizer of the Spanish and the Spanish-American literature in Bulgaria and of the Bulgarian literature and culture in the Hispanic world through publications in the press in Bulgaria and abroad and through his work as the first translator directly from Spanish to Bulgarian.
