Darò, Valeria. 1990. Voice frequency in languages and simultaneous interpretation. The Interpreters' Newsletter 3 : 88–92.

Abstract

In this paper, the author provides a description of an experimental research to assess fundamental frequency in one and the same speaker producing the same vocal signal throughout statements in five different languages. The aim of the experiment is to determine whether the fundamental frequency of a polyglot (female) subject is the same for all languages she knows, or whether and how it changes according to the spoken language. The findings provide some insight into the non-verbal emotional messages that interpreters send to their audience through the characteristics of their voices.
