Abstract
In this paper, it is claimed that translational competence may be fruitfully acquired via practice in the analysis and ‘translation’ of source and target language conversational segments. Students of translation thus move from the multiple-source oral interactive mode (discourse) to the single-source written mode (text). A translation model consistent with the results of cross-cultural discourse analyses conducted by the author is presented in support of the interactional approach to translation adopted in this paper.
