Abstract

After giving an historical overview of introspective methods, which have become familiar in second language acquisition research, the author points to some problems connected with these methods. It seems to be important to be aware of how data-collection methods such as thinking-aloud were originally deployed, and why (particularly in psychology) they were criticized and later abandoned, lest they are applied uncritically in researching the translational process.
