Abstract

The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4 was a major success when it was first published in English in 1982. From its publication to 1994 the English book sold over five million copies and the author has written several sequels since. This ensured that translations were rapidly undertaken in other European countries: the French translation was first published in 1984, the Dutch translation followed in 1985. Both translations enjoyed quite some popularity and went through different editions. In this paper, a comparison is drawn between Sue Townsend’s original and the translated versions mentioned. This paper mainly focuses on the issue of context adaptation, which is considered an essential feature of the translation of juvenile literature. This issue is discussed through detailed analysis of selected items such as cover, motto and footnotes on the level of the preliminary data.
