In studies on film adaptation, screenplays are mostly disregarded, in spite of the fact that research based on them can reveal a lot about the transformation process. In terms of Translation Studies, the screenplay is no longer the source text, but not yet the target text either. First of all, there are many formal differences. The screenplay is a written text, yet is different from a literary work, as it implies many references to the audiovisual and dramatic medium it is designed for. In its formal structure it is bound by strict rules. Secondly, there are also differences on the level of content. This paper concentrates on the screenplay of the film Out of Africa. The discussion is limited to an analysis on the level of content. The first section investigates the shifts from source text to screenplay; next, the differences between the screenplay and the film are looked into.
