Abstract
Translog is a computer program that logs the keyboard activity in making a translation. For research purposes, it can be used to extend direct observation and to supplement think-aloud protocolling. With detailed real-time information about the typing process, all the editing that goes into writing, how much time is spent on what translation tasks, and the connection between time delay and information processing can be studied. The paper summarizes the various functions in the Translog program and describes how data are recorded, and how they can be represented and analysed. Finally, a plea is made for triangulation, the combination of methodologies, as a means of improving translation research methodology.
