Abstract
Translating for children is in many ways of very special importance for Finland. Even if Finnish children’s literature, especially the Finnish picture book, is thriving, two thirds of the new titles published for children in Finland every year are translations, half of them from the English language. In this paper, the author discusses the issues she finds most important in translating as a whole, and, especially, in translating for children: dialogics, reading, situation and the purpose of the translation, loyalty – loyalty to the reader of the translation and loyalty to the author of the original. Thus, the author deals with translation as cross-cultural communication, especially from the point of view of different readers.
