Abstract

This paper aims to show how different translation options may confer specific textual functions to rhetorical questions in the TL text as compared to the SL text. Leaving aside the more obvious cases where English rhetorical questions have been rendered by means of corresponding Swedish rhetorical questions, the author concentrated on a few cases of non-correspondence between the types of sentences used in the original and the ones selected for the various translations. In the three Swedish translations of Shaw’s Pygmalion that were analyzed, English rhetorical questions have been sometimes rendered in Swedish by means of declarative, imperative or exclamatory sentences or by means of declarative questions. Conversely, a number of English declarative sentences or non-rhetorical questions have been translated into Swedish by means of rhetorical questions.
