Within the relevance-theoretical framework, communication is understood as a process whereby the addressee infers the intention made manifest by the speaker in a certain context. Thus, it attempts to solve the shortcomings of the traditional code model, for which communication is limited to the addressee's decoding of the message encoded by the addressee. The author argues that such a model is particularly fruitful for the explanation of resources such as irony, as a discrepancy between the words expressed and the meaning intended to be communicated. As such, it is likely to create specific problems in any translation process. The paper analyses instances of irony which may even be caused by the addressee's misunderstanding of the speaker's message. It explores the strategies adopted in the translation to cope with irony. The study is based upon Rojas's La Celestina and its earliest English version, Rastell's Calysto and Melebea.
