Translation is one of the main vehicles for the representation of foreign cultures in domestic environments and, as a result, has become the battleground of cultural, ideological and linguistic differences. The ‘aggression’ involved in this type of appropriation is usually suffered by ‘minor cultures’, whose identity features disappear and even become identified with features of the target culture. The 1926 Galician fragments of Ulysses show a similar example of appropriation, but from a different point of view. In this case, it is an appropriation done by a minority in order to serve domestic purposes. The whole existence of these fragments obeys a cultural purpose which was part of the ideological programme of the translator and his generation: the cultural recovery of Galicia as a nation. The Galician translator is central in this study, since his lexical choices, his particular use or manipulation of Galician language offers a representation of Joyce’s work.
