This essay uses the inferential approach to translation being developed in Gutt & Sim Telling Translation: an inference-based approach. This approach models translation as an interpretive use of language (Sperber & Wilson 1995), specifically as a communicative act of retelling (Gutt 2000). It relies on a full work-paper study of the chosen passage. Employing recent work in pragmatics in a study of the Lukan passage, the paper looks at the pair of utterances recording the exchange between some Sadducees and Jesus, spelling out the contextual specifics and their role in the interpretive process. Particular attention is paid to identifying the essential contextual assumptions evoked by the utterance of each interlocutor, and calculating the implications that derive from computing text plus assumptions. The detail of a rhetorical analysis in these terms allows translators to address in similar detail the contextual issues for translating the passage.
