Abstract

Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit can inform our understanding of how an individual creates a text and how a community assigns meaning to it. Both of these processes lie at the heart of modern translation theory and practice. Communication involves five moments: the three moments of action as identified by Hegel, the moment in which the community makes commitments about the text, and the moment in which the community negotiates a shared understanding.
