Abstract

This paper aims to use some translations of the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf to exemplify some of the difficulties that a translator must come to terms with when embarking on such a project. The paper provides a summary of the poem, considers its form, embarks upon a few types of translation and looks into specific translation problems such as metaphors, compounds, proper nouns and rhythm.
