Abstract

The book is intended as an introduction to (the study of) translation, with translation students as its primary target audience. The relation established by translation between a source and a target text, results in a set of paired texts called ‘duo texts’. The book treats the characteristics of this relation, dealing extensively with the notion of equivalence and correspondence, and describing shifts as procedures used by translators to adapt their product to requirements of intended function, target audience and target language. There are chapters on the history of translation, on interpreting, audiovisual translation, the use of the computer in translating. Where appropriate, the questions dealt with are related to the main concepts and theories in translation studies. The book includes references to basic works such as readers, handbooks, dictionaries and encyclopedias of translation studies, and closes with a chapter on online resources for the translator and the translation trainee.
