Abstract
In this paper, the author aims to outline some of the developments in audiovisual translation and reminds us of the need for university-level training instead of on-the-job learning, as well as of the need for more diverse and empirically-based research to replace speculative or prescriptive approaches. The author sees audiovisual translation as an increasingly important part of Translation Studies, itself a fast-evolving discipline. The author also casts doubt on hypothesized future scenario ruling out the need even for subtitling in some European countries.
