Abstract

The questioning of memory, a revaluation of narrative structure in film noir and the way language is used are some of the issues addressed in Christopher Nolan’s Memento (2000). This paper examines Memento as an appraisal of the film noir genre or style, while exploring some of the antecedents of its tropes and motifs. The paper also takes its discussion into the wider field and seeks to question the art of subtitling and how far the subtitler should be faithful to the original text.
