This article examines the problem of pronouncing foreign proper and place names in Arabic satellite media and presents a poignant critique of the prudish ways of articulating foreign words that might sound rude or sexual. Arabic news readers prefer to pronounce foreign proper names and place names in the native phonetic form of foreign names, thus flouting the rules of Arabic pronunciation, drawing attention to the very thing these methods are trying to avoid, and producing a reverse effect. This article also examines pronunciation and intonation problems of Arabic news readers.
