Abstract

This article examines the issues involved in translating colloquial language. Apart from the problem of finding equivalent linguistic items, account has to be taken of the range and function of colloquial registers in each culture, as well as of the connotations of certain stereotypical items. Examples are taken from two of Queneau's novels, Zazie dans le metro and Le Chiendent.
