Abstract

Situational, social and geographical connotations operate to a varying extent both in the dialogues and in the narrative, with its passages of interior monologue. They are achieved by phonetic features, as transcribed in the text, by lexical choices, and by morphology and syntax. This study describes the linguistic devices used in the translation to achieve the same connotations, locates the difficulties encountered by the translator in maintaining stylistic coherence, and poses the question of how to translate dialect.
