Abstract

This collective volume is concerned with the impact of English as the lingua franca of today's world, in particular its relationship with the languages of a rapidly evolving Europe. The volume opens with an exploration of the concept of language and power and the present-day use of English across national borders: the influence of English on other European languages is considered alongside the implications for modern language teaching and learning. Following a chapter devoted to the topical subject of linguistic imperialism, the influence of English on a number of European languages is examined. Further topics include translation into English as a second language and linguistic competence and the native speaker. A discussion of the unequal relationship between English and the languages of Europe manifested in literary translation concludes the volume.
