The author opens her article by stating that she enters on very thin ice because of two reasons: the first reason is that she isn’t a traductologist, but ‘only’ a translator, and the second one is connected with the subject matter. Many people say that novels or plays adapted for television have stepped outside the realm of literature and that they no longer deserve to be classified as literature. And just as many people say that subtitle translating is such a specific form of language conversion that it has stepped outside the category of translations. In this article, Reid does not consider the question of what literature is or precisely what happens when the art turns to television. Instead, she briefly explains how subtitle translators work and then goes into the problems involved in subtitling literature into subtitles.
