In this paper the author deals with a few of the many problems inherent in translating the Song of Songs into English and into Dutch. She limits herself to the translation problems, without going deeper into the importance of the song for European culture in general. In comparing translations, the author hasn’t tried to cover the field, but refers to several religious works. Although she limits herself in this article to the translation problems, it is impossible to discuss translations of the Song of Songs without paying attention to the text itself. Further in the article, Stienstra tries to show that someone who translates the Song of Songs chooses particular options rather than others, as a result of the interpretation, whether allegorical or not, of the whole text, that he either implicitly or explicitly adheres to.
