Paradise Lost

Abstract

In this article, Piet Verhoeff discusses some early translations of Paradise Lost. Verhoeff concludes that translating Paradise Lost is a task of overwhelming complexity. Syntactic, semantic and stylistic/pragmatic problems present themselves in such numbers that it is often impossible for the translator to remain alert and not to miss one or two of the finer details. Five early translations of Paradise Lost are used to subscribe this point of view. These five translations are discussed and compared with each other.
