This paper deals with the Dutch writer H.C. ten Berge whose literary career began in the early 1960s. His published work comprises poems, novels, short stories, essays, a travelogue, and a substantial and altogether remarkable body of translations. In this paper the author isn’t concerned that much with detailed comparisons between particular source texts and Ten Berge’s Dutch renderings of them, but rather with the place which these translations occupy in relation to Ten Berge’s literary – and in particular his poetic – output as a whole, including the poetological concerns underpinning it.
