Abstract

In this article, Nestor Schumacher compares the translations of Sonnet 1.2 by Rilke. This sonnet isn’t the most famous one, but does have the advantage to situate the initial theme of the oeuvre. The author describes the form of a sonnet, and states that, in every translation, the translator has to sacrifice something to save what he or she considers essential. Another important element in translating poetry, is rhythm. How do translators render rhythm? What choices do they make? This and much more is discussed in Schumacher’s article.
