This article makes an analysis of the confrontation between languages and cultures in the field of audivisual translation, more specifically in the case of translating German into French. By comparing the language and style of the subtitled version of Thomas Mann's Zauberberg a number of issues of audiovisual translation are discussed such as word order, abstract nouns, modalisation, condensation and syntactic transfers.
